We are thrilled to announce that former professional footballer, Jay Bothroyd, has joined us as an official Young Epilepsy ambassador.
Bothroyd, known for his illustrious career in football, is now lending his voice and influence to supporting children and young people living with epilepsy in the UK.
Since being diagnosed with epilepsy in his teens, Jay has had a remarkable career, playing professional football for over 20 years both at home and internationally, including in the Premier League and even for England!
I have lived with epilepsy since I was a teenager, I understand the challenges this condition can bring. I want to ensure that no child or young person faces these challenges alone. I’ve seen firsthand the difference support and information from Young Epilepsy can make and if there is anything I can to help the next generation then I am committed to giving it my all.Jay Bothroyd
Jay Bothroyd’s commitment to raising awareness about epilepsy and advocating for better support in schools aligns perfectly with our #UnderstandMyEpilepsy campaign.
Having recently lent his support to our petition calling for more support in schools, Jay emphasised the importance of understanding epilepsy and providing Individual Healthcare Plans for children in education. “Every child deserves a chance to succeed,” he stated. “It’s time for action. Let’s come together and make sure that schools have the necessary plans in place to support children with epilepsy.”
Jay has been actively involved in supporting us across many initiatives, most notably his recent inclusive football camp for children. Inspired by the experience of 11-year-old Cash, who was excluded from a holiday football camp with his friends simply because he has epilepsy. Jay’s camp provided an inclusive environment where children like Cash could participate and enjoy the sport without discrimination.
I believe that we can achieve much through greater awareness and understanding of epilepsy. I spent my professional career having to hide my epilepsy - I don’t want the same for young people growing up with it today. We must work together to understand epilepsy and tackle the stigma and misunderstanding that can surround it.Jay Bothroyd
As an ambassador, Bothroyd will participate in various campaigns and events, helping to raise awareness and funds for Young Epilepsy. His involvement is expected to inspire many and bring much-needed attention to the challenges faced by children with epilepsy.
We are delighted to welcome Jay Bothroyd as an ambassador. His passion and dedication to our cause will undoubtedly make a significant impact. Together, we can create a brighter future for children with epilepsy.Sally Brighton, Director of Fundraising and Development
