How to contact the media

Contacting the media is vital getting the word out there, it can help raise more awareness, recruit volunteers or people to take part in your fundraiser and boost donations.

Here are our tips on contacting the media:

  • Send a press release: local media are very supportive of people doing wonderful things. Contact your local newspapers, magazines and radio stations. Ring the news desk of the outlet, tell them a little bit about your story and ask for the best person to email a press release to.

Tips on how to write and send a press release

  • Share your story on social media: Twitter and Facebook are amazing resources and most media outlets will have both. Post your story on a media outlet’s wall on Facebook and @ a media’s account on Twitter to get their attention.
  • Add your event to an online calendar: people will often look for things to do in their local area on websites which have a ‘what’s going on’ calendar, good example of this is Mumsnet.
  • Newsletters: you can also try to get your event in your local work or school newsletter to spread the word to friends and colleagues.
