"Seeing my child have a seizure breaks my heart. In the beginning, I thought it was the end…every time. I can’t stop them from happening but please help us cope with the fear.

Lilly’s seizures can happen anywhere - on the way to the park, in the car, even just from getting too excited or too tired. If her routine changes, she can have a seizure.

As her mum, it breaks my heart."

You can help turn fear into hope

"I will never forget Lilly’s first seizure for as long as I live.

We were in the kitchen - I was doing the washing and Lilly was chatting away like toddlers do — and then suddenly she went quiet. I turned around and she was lying on the floor. She wasn’t breathing. She was grey. Her eyes were fixed.

I screamed for my partner, Dean. He started CPR while I called for an ambulance. I’m convinced Lilly died that day and I believe Dean brought her back.”

Donate to help stop the fear of seizures

Nearly every hour, another child or young person in the UK is diagnosed with epilepsy.

A few days after Lilly’s terrifying experience, she had her first visual tonic-clonic seizure. Then another. That’s when she was diagnosed with epilepsy.

“Lilly’s seizures can happen anywhere - on the way to the park, in the car, even just from getting too excited or too tired. If her routine changes, she can have a seizure. To her, this is normal. She doesn’t know any different. But as her mum, it breaks my heart.”

Seizures can be frightening. They can leave children in pain, feeling confused and alone.

“We’ve tried medication after medication. Some didn’t work. Some made things worse. One made her stop eating completely, and she ended up on a feeding tube. She’s been pinned down for needles and cannulas more times than any little girl should ever have to be. Now she’s terrified of hospitals.

Epilepsy doesn’t just affect the person who has it. It affects the whole family. It changes everything.

That’s why Purple Day matters so much to us.

No parent should have to watch their child go through this alone.”
