The power of your support

Epilepsy support at school – Survey report 2023

Young people with epilepsy, and their parents, told us about their experiences of epilepsy support at school.

  • 1 in 3

children with epilepsy do not get the support they need at school

They are unnecessarily missing out on their childhood and their futures are being put at risk, because people don’t understand epilepsy and how it can be different for everyone.

  • Only 1/3

of school staff feel confident managing a seizure in a classroom

This highlights the need for better education and training to ensure the safety and well-being of students with epilepsy.

  • 42%

of people with epilepsy age 16-59 are unemployed

This shows that we need to create more job opportunities and support for people with epilepsy to help them find work.

Voice & Support Services

Youth Support Services

Amplify the voices of young people with epilepsy

#UnderstandMyEpilepsy

With the support of generous funders, Young Epilepsy launched the #UnderstandMyEpilepsy campaign to draw attention to the fact that 1 in 3 children with epilepsy are not getting the support they need at school. Led by young people, the campaign called for every child with epilepsy to have an Individual Healthcare Plan – gathering over 16,000 signatures that were presented to education leaders in all four UK nations, urging action so every child can be safe, supported and fully included in school life.

“I wanted to be a part of this campaign because I want people to be aware of the struggles. I want them to get the help so that they can succeed in their educational journey. I don't want anyone to go through what I went through.” - Zunera - Youth Voice Network member featured in the #UnderstandMyEpilepsy campaign

OPM-MEG Brain Imaging

The Wolfson Foundation was a key partner in equipping our Diagnostic Suite with the world’s first OPM-MEG brain scanner, developed in collaboration with leading universities and designed specifically for children. Their grant funded the purchase of OPM-MEG sensors and IT equipment, transforming the epilepsy diagnostic process with scans that are faster, more comfortable and more accurate, leading to earlier interventions and better outcomes for families.
