Young Epilepsy supports petition for school support

Young Epilepsy are supporting a petition to raise awareness of schools’ duties to support children with medical conditions.

Working as part of the Health Conditions in Schools Alliance, the charity found that 78% of schools do not have a policy in place for ensuring these children are safe and have full access to educational opportunities.

12 year-old Jenny’s life was put in danger after a hypoglycaemic attack at school, because her school was unaware that they needed a written plan to support children with medical conditions. Jenny’s mother launched the petition to raise awareness of schools’ responsibilities.

From September 2014, schools in England have been required by law to have a policy in place to support children with medical conditions such as epilepsy and diabetes. The petition asks for the Department for Education Minister, Edward Timpson, to write to all schools in England and to ask Ofsted to include a check for medical conditions policies as part of their inspection of schools.
