National epilepsy report features St Piers pupil - Jake's story

Young Epilepsy is really pleased that Jake, one of our students from St Piers School, is featured on the front cover of the recent Epilepsy12 report (published by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health). The report charts children's first year of epilepsy care across the country, as well as the epilepsy services provided in different areas. Young Epilepsy works closely with RCPCH, as part of the Epilepsy12 project board.

Jodie, Jake's mum, told us about their epilepsy journey as a family and how Young Epilepsy has supported them:

"Jake has blossomed since starting at St Piers, Young Epilepsy. He has made some lovely friends and has a good relationship with his peers and teachers. Jake really enjoys helping out on the farm and other outdoor activities  and also having swimming sessions. He also enjoys cooking lessons and always brings home some treats he has baked to share with me.

"Jake was diagnosed with a rare form of epilepsy just over two years ago. From having seizures almost daily it resulted in him losing all ability to speak for at least five months. With a lot of support from professionals and family, together with the right medicine, his speech started to come back slowly. I never thought I would hear his beautiful voice again or the words 'mummy I love you'. As you can imagine I was overjoyed with his progress.

"Jake is a very happy loving boy and a bundle of energy. We feel very blessed that he's now healthy and attends Young Epilepsy. All the staff are friendly and always there to help in any way they can. I'm sure Jake will go on enjoying his journey at Young Epilepsy and continue progressing with his learning. After being in two other schools that unfortunately couldn't meet his needs and being in and out of education I finally got him in to the best school for Jake. It's been a long journey for both myself and Jake but now I feel happy and content that my son is doing well and enjoying his everyday school life.

"I'm very happy and proud that Jake's photo is being used for the Epilepsy12 report. The picture just goes to show how happy he is at Young Epilepsy."
