Epilepsy In Typography by James Bletsoe

Epilepsy and Art

With the announcement of the nominated pieces of art for this year’s Turner prize being announced, we wanted to look at one of our favourite artists, Young Epilepsy Champions Awards Bright Star 2016 Winner, James Bletsoe.

James, who uses his epilepsy and seizures as inspiration for his art is currently studying a Foundation Art course at Cardiff Arts Academy in Wales. He was incorrectly diagnosed with autism and, even after he received the correct diagnosis, doctors found his condition was resistant to medication and his seizures worsened.

Using epilepsy as an inspiration, James draws how he feels his seizures manifest and the resulting artwork has formed his major final year project at school.

Take a look at some of James’s pieces below or follow his Instagram account.

Famous artists with epilepsy

Now, we cannot confirm all these artists had epilepsy but it is hotly rumoured they did:

  • Vincent van Gogh
  • Edward Lear
  • George Inness
  • Charles Doyle
  • Dmitri Sinodi-Popov
  • Kyffin Williams
