Tom

For parents and teachers alike, seeing a withdrawn teenager starting to realise his potential and gain the confidence to grow into young adulthood is truly rewarding.

For 18-year-old Tom, joining St Piers School as a residential student has proved a lifechanging experience. Tom had always found changes in his school day difficult and, when he first came here, he had very limited ability in reading and counting. He really had no interest in learning, explains mum Susan.

For his parents, choosing a residential school was not an easy decision, but the family could see that the consistent, round-the-clock approach that Young Epilepsy offers would be beneficial for Tom.

Now Tom loves school and is enjoying learning, his mum says. He is learning to be more independent and at last wants to be a teenager. He is now taking an interest in what he looks like and what he does. He is proud of his achievements.

Managing Tom’s complex epilepsy has been a real team effort, says dad Adrian. We see it as a working partnership between ourselves, Tom and the team at Young Epilepsy. We want to see him achieve as much as he can, to reach his highest potential and we believe that he is in the right place to do that now.
