Teaching
Individually planned learning
Young Epilepsy provides an individual approach to teaching. Learner groups typically include five or six students, and each student follows an individual programme tailored to their needs.
The right support
Our highly motivated, multidisciplinary team work closely with each young person to support their progress and make the most of their abilities and talents. Much of our work is about developing confidence, communication and advocacy skills and building mobility, personal care and life skills.
Person-centred learning
The college focuses on developing the skills and talents of each student. We provide individually structured programmes for young people who have epilepsy and need additional support to cope with the emotional and social demands that this places on them. We develop confidence and skills to manage epilepsy which enable a high proportion of our learners to integrate into mainstream college with additional specialist support.
For students with moderate to severe learning difficulties, learning is enhanced through:
- Courses at partnership colleges, with Young Epilepsy staff accompanying them
- Work experience with a wide range of employers
- The use of Access Technologies and ICT to support independence
- Building on each student’s skills to prepare them for future independence
For those students who are developing communication and choice-making skills we offer:
- A full sensory curriculum incorporating a wide range of sensory learning opportunities including art, singing, cooking and gardening skills
- Access to the Speech and Language and other therapy services on campus
- Augmentative communication including Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), Intensive Interaction and Signalong, which is used by trained staff across campus
We provide a rich mix of courses and activities for students to choose from, including:
- Learning for Life courses
- Nationally recognised Awards Scheme Development and Accreditation Network (ASDAN) programme
