For parents
Having a son or daughter go off to college can be a worrying time for any parent. When your child has extra challenges it can be even more stressful.
At St Piers College we understand your concerns and work to make the transition to college as problem-free as possible.
Individual assessment
To establish a student’s individual needs and the level of support they need, we assess them on a two day placement visit, during our autumn term assessment week or by appointment during the academic year.
All new students follow an induction programme to help them make new friends, find their way around and undertake further assessments. This helps us set targets and develop Individual Learner Plans.
Taking responsibility
We encourage students to take responsibility for their own learning and, with staff support, they help to set their own goals and targets. We monitor and revise targets so students can recognise the progress they have made and take on greater challenges.
Where appropriate, we involve parents and carers in the student’s development, including annual reviews of progress and termly meetings to agree Individual Learner Targets for the forthcoming term.
Epilepsy
Our staff are experienced in dealing with seizures and the wider effects of epilepsy. They work with each student to manage their condition and minimise disruption to their learning and social development.
We are able to provide 24 hour specialist medical support from our fully equipped medical centre, with skilled staff who administer medication and treatment, and help students understand their epilepsy. Where appropriate, students are supported to manage their own medication, increasing their independence.
Residential accommodation is provided within 23 separate houses. Each residential unit has a dedicated staff team made up of Assistant Unit Managers and support staff. The number of staff on each unit is based on individual student needs.
