Paediatric epilepsy research at Young Epilepsy
The research team at Young Epilepsy continues to make a major contribution to understanding the medical, educational and social aspects of childhood epilepsy. We have developed an epilepsy research programme working integrally with UCL-Institute of Child Health and Great Ormond Street Hospital.
The research programme which leads local, national and international collaborations dedicated to childhood epilepsy is undertaken by The Prince of Wales’s Chair of Childhood Epilepsy and other leading professionals in the field of epilepsy.
Central to the research programme is the ability to apply for and manage research grants and funding. The various research activities are funded through a combination of research grants associated with specific projects and donations from individuals and other charitable organisations.
The vision is to enhance and diversify the current research programme with the primary aims of:
- Characterising the adverse neurological, cognitive, behavioural, social and educational outcomes in children with epilepsy, investigate the pathogenesis and identify early predictors of those outcomes.
- Maximising current medical and surgical management and to develop novel therapies for primary and secondary interventions.
- Developing and testing models of multi-agency care for children with severe epilepsy and their families.
- Translating research findings to clinical practice, and optimize treatment of children with epilepsy.
