Training
At Young Epilepsy we have a dedicated onsite Training Department to ensure that all staff have access to the necessary learning and development opportunities that they require.
All new employees attend a comprehensive 5 day induction programme, which covers all the basic knowledge they need for them to work at Young Epilepsy. This incorporates courses to meet both the Common Induction Standards and the Children's Workforce Development Council standards. In addition we provide further training courses specifically tailored to the needs of the organisation and individual job roles.
Examples of such courses include:-
- Epilepsy Awareness
- An Introduction to Autism
- Behaviour and Learning Disability
- Behaviour Management
- Intensive Interaction
- Facilitating Play and Leisure
- Student Relaxation Workshops
- Listening Skills
- Stress Awareness
- Communication with students (Signalong)
- Child Development/Transition
Ongoing training
All staff are required to have the appropriate skills and knowledge for their job, and there is an on-going training programme for core skills – e.g. Manual Handling, PRICE (behaviour management), Basic Food Hygiene, Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults and Children, Health and Safety, and First Aid training courses to ensure all employees' skills and knowledge are kept up to date.
A number of general skills courses are also offered during the year and on Inset training days, such as IT Skills, Appraisal Training, Absence Management and Team working, as well as courses directly related to the area of work, such as Intensive Interaction and Play.
Inset days are also used for departmental training sessions and updates on specific developments of techniques relating to the area of work.
These are provided by either internal or external trainers, as appropriate.
Vocational training, management training and development
Individual training and development requirements are identified during the annual personal development review process, when every member of staff sits down with their line manager to discuss their performance over the previous 6-12 months and their future development needs.
For all level of care workers – i.e. Unit Managers, Unit Deputies and support workers, a programme is being launched to enable them all to access NVQ Caring for Children and Young People Level 3 or CACHE equivalent if the staff member works in education.
All newly appointed first line managers are provided with formal and informal training to help them develop the knowledge and skills they need to be an effective manager. As they become more established in their roles, our first line managers can further develop their expertise and achieve an accredited management qualification from the Institute of Leadership and Management.
Young Epilepsy supports individuals to study for various vocational qualifications, such as The Diploma in Play and the Diploma in Epilepsy, and Open University degrees – e.g. Understanding Health and Social Care, Childhood and Youth Studies.
Staff are also supported to attend various study days, conferences and training sessions to assist their vocational development and maintain their professional accreditation where relevant.
